  • Jumping on the Green Bandwagon

    Before You Read

What is your opinion about green issues?
Do you believe that companies are always honest when they say they are ‘green’ (environmentally friendly)?

It seems that every company is touting itself as a green company. A long time ago when I was a student I worked in BP Oil and I remember how BP changed its logo (company sign) to show the new image it wanted to promote. That image was, “clean green BP”. They wanted to show that they were an oil company that is concerned about the environment. Well everyone knows the news about BP in 2010 and the big oil disaster and pollution in the Mexican gulf. And so perhaps now when you think of BP you don’t think of a green company. Many companies are needing to promote a green image and are doing very good things to be environmentally friendly, clean and green.

Perhaps another example of a company jumping on the green bandwagon is SK Energy. They have rebranded themselves as SK Innovation as they are going all-out to make eco-friendly products such as batteries for electric vehicles and eco-friendly plastic products. It’s all very admirable, but of course smart business needs to read the trends and stay ahead of the game if they want to stay profitable or stay in the black. Perhaps in the future we will live in a healthier world. If you go back more than a hundred years you will discover that London was a dirty place because of all the horses and their animal pollution. Then along came the motorcar. The innovation of the motorcar was seen as something that would make the streets cleaner. I guess cars did make things cleaner in London, but now we know that cars are one of the pollution problems.

So do you buy into all they hype about being green?
