    Before you read/listen
What foreign foods do you like? Why?
If you could open a Korean restaurant in a foreign country then which one would you open and why?

It appears that Korean food is appealing to the global palate. It is now easy to find a Korean restaurant in the financial hubs of countries such as in the Philippines. Various Korean food franchises are spreading in Manila and countless people are lining up to experience the delicious taste of many Korean dishes. Only two decades ago, American family restaurant chains such as TGI Friday’s and Outback Steakhouse were introduced and became popular in Korea.

American fast foods had the most control in the fast food industry and they surely did their part in dominating/controlling the palates of not only Koreans, but the entire Asian community. Apparently things are changing. Along with the soaring popularity of K-pop in countless Asian regions, the Southeast Asian countries have welcomed Korean dishes into their lives.

New Korean restaurants are settling into new regions easily, and foreign companies are investing in flagship franchise Korean restaurants in Japan, the U.S. and Europe. For example, Kyecheon Chicken, a household name of soy-sauce friend chicken, is now one of the most successful Korean franchise chains abroad. Who would have thought that Bibimbap chains would open up in Beijing, Los Angeles and even in Singapore? By using a new fast food slogan, “healthy and fast”, the simple meal is attracting foreign consumers. There’s no doubt that fast food giants such as McDonalds have strong competitiveness in the global market. For one thing, Mc’Donalds has been around for a long time and the company has done a fantastic job at planning and embedding itself in practically all countries across the globe.
