  • How to Sell a Boring Product

  • Before you read: some questions to help you think about the topic and the words you might need.
    While you were sleeping, a brand category was being redefined.
    Marketing and advertising products like exciting new smart phones, or an emotional product like travel would seem like a walk in the park for advertising companies, but a company in Australia found an interesting way to advertise pillows. Pillows like other dull products such as toilet paper or potatoes are not something that have top of mind awareness. As consumers we make a quick decision and we don’t ask for advice about products like pillows for the bed. Well a company in Australia, Tontine came up with a novel idea – date stamping. Yes, by putting a use by date on a pillow that increased their sales dramatically. This created repurchase.
    For many companies, getting people to repurchase products is easy. Products like soap for example have huge repurchase. But products like pillows don't. The average person replaces their pillow about every four years. They know that pillows can get unhealthy after some time, but their pillow is still working with no problem, so they don’t think to replace it. By putting a use by date stamp on your pillow then every night when you go to sleep, a memory is triggered that you should think about replacing your pillow one day.
