French winemakers will transform unsold wine into hand sanitizer to make room for the next grape collection.

Wine sales and exports, especially to the US, plunged because of coronavirus. This means winemakers have millions of liters of unsold wine.

The alcohol that is leftover will be used exclusively for the pharmaceutical (drug stores etc) and cosmetic beauty industry. And it will be used to produce hand sanitizer, and for the production of ethanol (ethanol is a kind of fuel).

Each winemaker has until June 19 to say the amount he or she wishes to turn into alcohol for making sanitizer or other products.

If they do this they will receive 58 to 78 euros in compensation. The prices are different because of which regions the wine comes from. European money will pay for the project. Brussels gave its green light for the exceptional action.

Major wine-producing countries such as Spain and Italy have done similar things to control having too much wine. Coronavirus has added to the problem of the French wine industry. The wine industry already had problems trying to export to the US as punitive taxes were made from the US.
