Before He Became the President of the USA, he Served Ice-cream

    Pre discussion questions

Why is President Obama serving ice-cream?

Did you, or do you, have a part time job when at university? What did you learn from it?

President Barack Obama looks back fondly on the summer of 1978, when he worked selling ice-creams. He worked for Baskin Robbins near his grandparents' Honolulu home At that time he thought that working there would give him less time to follow his dream to be a basketball player. And so he thought it was a waste of time. He only worked for the money.

And President Obama said that serving rows and rows of very hard ice cream can be brutal on the wrists. "As a teenager working behind the counter at Baskin-Robbins in Honolulu, I was less interested in what the job could do or how it could  help my future. Instead I was more interested about the lost time for not being able to practice my basketball moves like jump shots.

"My first summer job wasn’t exactly glamorous. But it taught me some valuable lessons," Obama said. "Responsibility. Hard work. Balancing a job with friends, family, and school are what it taught me.”

It was 16-year-old Obama's first job. And even though financial aid helped Obama go to the esteemed, expensive Punahou School, he didn't begin working until the summer before his senior year of high school.

It's part of the reason why his government is launching the Summer Opportunity Project, he wrote. This is a national program to help teenagers get into their first jobs. It is to teach them the value of hard work and keep them away from trouble and crime after school hours.

Obama said that because he served so many ice-creams he doesn’t care about ice-cream now. But he did say that he will never forget that job — or the people who gave him that opportunity.  They helped him to succeed and become the President because of the things he learned from having a part time job all those years ago.
