    ◆ 일상 생활 속 활동 (30초 답변 연습)  - 운전의 장단점 비교 

    토익스피킹 세 번째 유형 4~6번 질문 중 6번 문항은 30초 답변입니다. 주로 장단점을 비교하는 질문이나, 무언가를 선택할 때 고려해야 할 사항들에 대한 질문이 자주 출제되고 있습니다. 오늘은 교통수단(transportation) 과 관련된 주제 중 ‘advantages and disadvantages of driving a car’ (운전의 장단점) 을 비교해 보도록 하겠습니다. 

    우선, driving a car 의 경우, 장점은 무엇일까요? 차로 운전하여 다니면 편리할 것입니다. 여름에 덥거나 겨울에 추울 때, 혹은 비오는 날에 대중교통을 이용하기 위해서 기다리는 것 보다는, 자가용을 이용하여 이동하는 편이 훨씬 편하죠. 또 다른 장점으로는 원할 때 어디든지 자가용으로 갈 수 있다는 점입니다. 아무리 밤 늦은 시간이라 하더라도, 차를 운전해서 직접 필요한 것을 사러 갈 수도 있죠. 택시를 늦은 시간에 기다릴 필요도 없을 것입니다. 그럼 이러한 장점들을 영어로 표현해 볼까요?

    1) It’s convenient to get around. (돌아다니기 편리하다)
    - Especially, when it’s too hot in summer or too cold in winter, you can get around easily by driving a car instead of waiting for a bus or subway. 

    2) You can go anywhere to get something by car. (뭔가를 사러 차로 어디든지 갈수 있다)
    - Even late at night, you can just get on your car and drive to a mall to get anything you need. You don’t even need to wait for a taxi at night. 

    반면에, 운전하는 것의 단점은 무엇일까요? 바로 비용 문제입니다. 차를 운전하면 가장 많은 비용을 차지하는 것이 바로 기름값이죠. 기름은 ‘oil’이라고 하지 않고 ‘gas’라고 표현한다는 점을 알아두세요! 요즈음에는 특히 기름값이 더 비싸기 때문에 운전을 하면 돈이 많이 들게 됩니다. 보험료 역시 무시할 수 없겠죠. 또 다른 단점으로는, 교통 혼잡 때문에 차에서 시간을 많이 낭비하거나 약속 장소에 늦게 도착하는 경우도 생길 수 있다는 점 입니다.
    자, 그럼 이러한 단점들을 영어로 표현해 보죠. 

    1) It costs too much money to drive a car. (운전하는데 비용이 너무 많이 든다)
    - I should pay for the insurance and the price of gas is very high. 

    2) When you drive a car, you get stuck in traffic many times and end up being later for an appointment. (운전을 하면 많은 경우 교통 혼잡에 막히고 약속에 결국 늦고 말게 된다)
    - In a big city, three are so many cars on the roads and the traffic jam is terrible all day long. If you take a subway, you can make it on time, but when you drive, you’d better hurry up to beat the traffic.

    이제, 실전 예상 문제에 대한 답변 연습을 해보겠습니다. 

    6) What are some advantages and disadvantages of driving a car?

    I think that there are some advantages and disadvantages of driving a car. First, the advantage of driving a car is that I can go anywhere conveniently because I don’t need to wait for a bus or a subway. Especially late at night or on a cold day, driving a car is much better. However, the disadvantage of driving a car is that it costs too much money. I should pay for the gas and insurance fees as well. In addition, when you drive a car, you get stuck in traffic many times and end up being later for an appointment. If you take a subway, you can make it on time, but when you drive, you’d better hurry up to beat the traffic.


    30초라는 시간이 의외로 긴 듯 하면서도 굉장히 짧습니다. 핵심 포인트만 잘 골라서 최소 6~7문장으로 답변할 수 있도록 열심히 반복 연습 하셔서 실력을 향상시키시길 바랍니다.
