#1. “There is ~” 와 “It is~” 를 구분하여 말하기!
Speking 강의를 하다보면 의외로 많은 학생들이 ‘There is ~’ 와 ‘It is~’ 를 혼동하는 것을 발견합니다. 물론 우리가 문법만 놓고 생각해보면 너무나도 쉽고 이해가 잘 되겠죠.
‘There is’는 ~가 있다 / ‘It is’ 는 ~이다.
간단한 구문이지만 막상 speaking 을 시작하면 상황은 많이 달라집니다.
얼마 전 강의 중에 한 학생에게 질문을 했었습니다 .
T : Could you describe your neighborhood?
S : I live in a commercial area, so there is noisy.
이렇게 학생이 대답을 하면 저는 곧바로 error correction 으로 들어갑니다.
“ 자, 다시 해보세요, It is noisy.
문제점은 한국식으로 사고하고 직역하는데 있죠. 우리나라 말로 생각해서 “ 저는 상업지역에서 살아요, 그래서 시끄러워요” 라고 말하고 싶었을 것인데 ‘시끄럽다’ 라고 표현하려면 ‘It is noisy’ 가 알맞은 표현입니다. 그래서 상당수의 학생들이 There is noisy 라고 실수를 할 때마다 즉각적으로 정정해주어야 합니다. 잘못된 표현이 굳어버리지 않도록!
또 하나의 예를 들어보면,
T : What can you see in your neighborhood?
S : Well… there are surrounded by many trees. So I can enjoy a great view.
역시나 곧바로 error correction 으로 들어갔습니다.
“ 다시 해보세요, It is surrounded by many trees!
아마도 그 학생은 우리나라 말로 “많은 나무로 둘러쌓여 있어요” 라고 생각해서 ‘있어요’ 때문에 there are 로 시작했을 겁니다. 굳이 there are 로 이야기를 시작한다면 There are many trees surrounding my neighborhood. (나무들이 있다) 가 정확하지만 동네를 주어로 이야기 한다면 달라지죠.
My neighborhood is surrounded by many trees.
=> It is surrounded by many trees.
자, 이제 이해가 되시나요? There is 구문과 It is 구문을 잘 구분하여서 정확하게 speaking 하는 연습을 하도록 합시다!

| I live in a commercial area called Sadang-dong in Seoul. There are many restaurants and shops around my neighborhood, so it is very convenient to live there. I can get anything I need easily even late at night because there are so many supermarkets which are open 24 hours. Also, there are many buses going to downtown, so it is easy for me to get around. I can just walk to the bus stop and catch a bus! One thing I’m not happy with my neighborhood is that there is an elementary school nearby my house, and it is noisy during the day when the children play on the playground. But I love living in my neighborhood. |
